Christo e Jeanne-Claude – Pralina N° 87

Christo Vladimirov Javacheff and Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon, both born on June 13, 1935, are considered among the most iconic couples in contemporary art. Christo, a Bulgarian artist trained at the Academy of Sofia, met Jeanne-Claude in Paris in 1958. This encounter sparked an unprecedented artistic and organizational collaboration, rooted in love and a passion for monumental art.

The art of Christo and Jeanne-Claude stands out for its innovative use of wrapping. Initially, Christo wrapped everyday objects and oil barrels, creating compositions that stimulate curiosity and reflection. The couple gained international fame in 1962 with the barrel barricade in Paris, ironically named the “Iron Curtain.”

Among their most famous works are the wrapping of the Kunsthalle in Bern (1968), the fountain of Spoleto, monuments in Milan, and the Aurelian Walls in Rome. Each project aims to rediscover the existing through the temporary transformation of urban spaces, creating a visual and conceptual dialogue with the surrounding environment.

In subsequent years, Christo and Jeanne-Claude dedicated themselves to large-scale landscape installations. Valley Curtain in Colorado, Running Fence in California, Surrounded Islands in Miami, and The Gates in New York are just some of their iconic creations that redefined the concept of land art.

In 2016, seven years after Jeanne-Claude’s passing, Christo created The Floating Piers on Lake Iseo. This spectacular installation allowed visitors to walk on water thanks to floating polypropylene walkways covered by vibrant yellow fabric, magnificently contrasting with the blue of the lake.

The philosophy of Christo and Jeanne-Claude is based on temporariness and environmental respect: their works last only a few weeks, and the materials used are always removed and recycled. Their approach was never ideological but driven by a gratuitous act of love towards humanity, offering unrepeatable moments of beauty, wonder, and emotion.
