Florencia Martinez was born in Buenos Aires in 1962. Her mother is originally from Italy.
As a painter, she finds inspiration in poetry: poets represent for her the source from which she can draw values worth living by.
One of these values is the reconstruction of one’s own memory; thus she decides to move to Italy in 1990.
She brings the women’s world to the fore. She underlines the changing roles of women in contemporary society. While this argument helps women gain wider appreciation for their individual capacities, it provokes rifts with the opposite sex, not to mention a sense of disorientation as well as a serious lack of reference points.
What’s more, she concentrates on the theme of memories. She beautifully sums it up by saying:“ I live in the present, thinking of what I will recall tomorrow”. In her recollections, she retrieves warm feelings and an irresistible desire to win over all conflicts.
Florencia Martinez executes paintings on embroidered canvas; the ornamental motif recalls the intimacy of family environment, where affection is cultivated through everyday life.
On the fabric she prints black-and-white fragments of photos taken mostly from the post war period.
As memories get merged, so do the images in her works: as a result they present paradoxical situations, rich of awe and fascination.
